Summary

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Love the premise, not the somewhat meandering plot, hence 3 stars。 The first time I heard about the similarities of this book to Gossip Girl and Get Out (less Gossip Girl, more Get Out btw) I instantly knew the culprit would be more complex than the work of one individual。

I would give this a 4 since it really taught me in depth about something I didn't know about before。 There was some parts that felt kinda slow and at the start Chiamaka was kind of annoying in the way she described high school as if its a game of intense chess。 However the end really did make up for it。 Around 3。75ish/4 I would give this a 4 since it really taught me in depth about something I didn't know about before。 There was some parts that felt kinda slow and at the start Chiamaka was kind of annoying in the way she described high school as if its a game of intense chess。 However the end really did make up for it。 Around 3。75ish/4 。。。more

WOW。 I really really enjoyed this book。 It was a lot better than I was expecting。 I didn’t really enjoy the end but it satisfied me。 I felt like there were some lose ends that I would’ve loved to see tied up but I still had to give it five stars。 It was so amazing。

I feel like I am very much in the minority when I say that this book did absolutely nothing for me。 Many reviewers describe it as a mix of “Gossip Girl” and “Get Out”- I agree wholeheartedly with this but the description is so literal。 I kept expecting twists and turns but it ended up being exactly what it’s described as the whole way through。 There were lots of loose ends that never got tied up and revelations that went nowhere。 It was very disappointing。 I read another book earlier this year- I feel like I am very much in the minority when I say that this book did absolutely nothing for me。 Many reviewers describe it as a mix of “Gossip Girl” and “Get Out”- I agree wholeheartedly with this but the description is so literal。 I kept expecting twists and turns but it ended up being exactly what it’s described as the whole way through。 There were lots of loose ends that never got tied up and revelations that went nowhere。 It was very disappointing。 I read another book earlier this year- “The Other Black Girl”- that had a somewhat similar concept as this but was much better executed in my opinion。 I am struggling to understand the positive reviews for this one (especially since the writing left a lot to be desired)。 。。。more

4。5 Star Rating Rounded UpIf you crave a story with 'Gossip Girl'/ 'Pretty Little Liars' anonymous harassment, with a dash of Jordan Peele's 'Get Out' suspense, and a sprinkle of LGBT representation, then this is the read for you。 This was a STELLAR book that covers many important -ism topics in such an enthralling way。 This story was terrifying because the horror elements in this book are ones that are/feel very real。 My heart goes out to the protagonists and their struggles in coming to terms 4。5 Star Rating Rounded UpIf you crave a story with 'Gossip Girl'/ 'Pretty Little Liars' anonymous harassment, with a dash of Jordan Peele's 'Get Out' suspense, and a sprinkle of LGBT representation, then this is the read for you。 This was a STELLAR book that covers many important -ism topics in such an enthralling way。 This story was terrifying because the horror elements in this book are ones that are/feel very real。 My heart goes out to the protagonists and their struggles in coming to terms with their identities, I can only hope that having stories and narratives similar to this one will help people feel less isolated and feel the need to suppress their identities in order to 'fit in'。 The ending provides such a satisfying conclusion to the events that take place, and I really enjoyed seeing the character development。 There are a few minor things that felt unresolved but all in all, was a book that highly lived up to my expectations。 。。。more

If you want a thriller with twist and turns I would not recommend this book to you because I felt like it was quite obvious what was going on the whole time which made some parts of the book quite slow for me; however if you want a great representation of lgbt+ love and romance as well as seeing some amazing black characters deal with racism this is the book for you。 The ending literally almost made me cry I tried so hard not to scream in the middle of walking to class。

Couldn't stop。 So powerful。 And she wrote this as a freshmen in college? WOW。 The realness is nauseating, but so important to experience。 The alternating perspectives didn't feel unneeded, rather their very different perspectives and personalities were exceptionally well-written。 I needed to find out who Aces was, and the shock of that discovery will sit with me for a long long time。 This is awesome。 I can't wait to recommend it to ALL my students。 Couldn't stop。 So powerful。 And she wrote this as a freshmen in college? AMAZING dark academia book that deals with issues like racism, homophobia, and classism。 Not only is the book masterfully written, but it is a continuous rollercoaster that uncovers the horrible things that white people have been doing to help ruin the lives of two Black students at a predominantly white private school。 This book is scary in the way that it is not quite farfetched, especially looking back at the history of the world。 highly highly reccomend this book!!

A disturbing, scary, uncomfortable allegory from an earnest young writer。 The story is a mashup of others we’ve seen, but feels personal and passionate (albeit heavy-handed)。 Discussion-worthy! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book had me hooked from the beginning! Black and queer representation!!!!Though out of the box for most peoples high school experience, it’s a great metaphor for the real fear and struggles of trying to fit into a society that already hates you and your skin tone, before even getting to know you or your personality and worse still hating you after they have already befriended you。

3。75 idk like the pace was incredible, very interesting, twisty and really really messed up, the ending was a bit flat for all the building up but really good nonetheless。 very important message about institutionalised racism, it’s very very real, perfectly portrayed so there’s a lot to think about。and when have i not liked dark academia huh

This book is trying to do too many things at once。 It dragged and was way too long。 Parts of it felt too heavy and negative。 While the story definitely has important issues that need to be discussed, I've seen it done in better, more thoughtful ways。 This book is trying to do too many things at once。 It dragged and was way too long。 Parts of it felt too heavy and negative。 While the story definitely has important issues that need to be discussed, I've seen it done in better, more thoughtful ways。 。。。more

3/5 starsI couldn't bring myself to finish this book。 There are a few scenes that hit a bit too close to home in terms of racism, homophobia, and toxic relationships。 The premise was interesting, and I loved the main characters as well。 The character development was one of the few things that kept me from dnfing too soon。 I didn't necessarily like the pacing, but it wasn't slow enough for me to get bored。I don't know if I would recommend this book。 If I did, it would be alongside a list of trigg 3/5 starsI couldn't bring myself to finish this book。 There are a few scenes that hit a bit too close to home in terms of racism, homophobia, and toxic relationships。 The premise was interesting, and I loved the main characters as well。 The character development was one of the few things that kept me from dnfing too soon。 I didn't necessarily like the pacing, but it wasn't slow enough for me to get bored。I don't know if I would recommend this book。 If I did, it would be alongside a list of triggers。 I know that a lot of people have triggers that make them finish a book immediately。 。。。more

I was very surprised by this book, I definitely thought I was leaving my more YA focused way of reading but I was completely sucked into this universe and was so intrigued by the characters。 I really loved this read and found it so hard to put down, the mystery I really loved, the atmosphere I was living for and I haven't been so engrossed in characters in a hot minute。 I was very surprised by this book, I definitely thought I was leaving my more YA focused way of reading but I was completely sucked into this universe and was so intrigued by the characters。 I really loved this read and found it so hard to put down, the mystery I really loved, the atmosphere I was living for and I haven't been so engrossed in characters in a hot minute。 。。。more

This is a YA book that feels like a YA book。I don't know, but the book is so relatable? Even though I didn't have to face stuff like racism and homophobia? definitely a page turner but the whole time i was rolling my eyes bc of how fake it seemed。 the author needs to pick a theme and stick to it, there was way too much going on and details in all the wrong places。
